FlatPig is my latest project, soley built for educational purposes. Quite literally, everything you’ll see for this company, I did. As a wanna-be entrepreneur, I’ve always had these large scale apps I thought would be wildly successful. They ranged from energy efficient products to global social networks. I still dream big when it comes to ideas, but when it comes to implementation, I rely on my UX education.
Over the last 3 years, I’ve been heavily focused on the user experience of products. Not just design or what’s marketable… more of what solves problems.
Over the last few years, I’ve been reading and teaching myself how to program. I know how to write HTML/CSS, but that’s just the look and feel. I’ve been fascinated with how I can make that look and feel come to life. I started by taking online courses and reading countless books. However, I was doing that because I wanted to build one of my global social networks. In that effort, I’ve learned that it takes quite a bit to accomplish that…
Then I began asking myself, “what’s a simple problem I could solve in my personal life.” Something small, that I would find useful. Ironically, I said that to myself while I was sitting in my squat rack in my garage.
For the last 17 years, I’ve been lifting weights. Ever since I moved into my new house, I’ve been working out in my garage, focused on my life-long mission of joining the 3-4-5 club. That’s 3 plates on the bench, 4 on the squat, and 5 on the deadlift. For the last decade, I’ve been using a Google doc to track those lifts, just to see if my strength is increasing over time. I then thought to myself, “I think I could build an app that does that.”
I then began planning, and like most projects, that started with an outline. As I began writing, my entire program, diet, and ideology toward weight lifting poured out. All of a sudden, the tracking app turned into a lifestyle brand… At least, that’s what I like to call it.
I then began designing, attempting to keep it as simple as possible. I did this, because I wanted to build in app soon, not spend a ton of time teaching myself. Once I built the app, and it was approved by Apple, I then build the marketing site. With the same strategy as the app, I started with an outline, and planned the entire thing out. Using bootstrap 4, I then built the responsive site, and finalized it with some corky graphics.
Although the project is small, I use it every day. It’s nothing to brag about, but I’m pretty proud of myself :)
