Photo Etiquette Cards was my second big entrepreneurial leap. I partnered with one of the best photographers in Washington, D.C., Diana Lewkowicz (I’m not making that up, she really is). We designed and sold stationery products that focused on asking people to stop taking photo’s at events.
As a professional photographer, Diana noticed an alarming amount of people standing in the way of her shots in order to take a photo with their phone. Given the rise of smartphones at the time, she wasn’t the only one faced with this issue.
Since someone already paid for a photographer at these events, it was our mission to stop people from ruining shots. Our research, sadly, uncovered that people were more focused about bragging to others online that they were at events, than they were just being at the events.
In packs of 100, we sold different styled cards that asked peopel to elligently put down their phones. The idea seemed brilliant, as it’s still an issue today. The problem is, it wasn’t enough to stop people from pulling out their phone and ruining shots. Diana and are still great friends, and continue collaborate on projects
My role in this company was to implement the operations side. Although I handled most of the operations and logistics, it was a highly collaborative effort. Using a variety of design software, I created the logo and designed the product. I then called fifty (serious) different print shops across the country to see who could make our product at a reasonable price. We attended trade shows and events, as well as implemented a legit digital marketing strategy to drive people to our site. All and all, my role was an “all in - sell my snowboard - cash in my CD’s” type effort in order to create the company. Sadly, we just couldn’t get people to put down their phones.
